What it is
A Family Visa is the residency permit issued to a dependant — spouse, child, or parent — sponsored by a UAE resident under Family Sponsorship rules. Duration matches the sponsor's residency (2 years for standard, up to 10 years for Golden Visa dependants). The dependant cannot work on a family visa unless they obtain their own work permit; switching from family visa to Employment Visa is a routine same-day cancellation/re-issuance flow.

How it works
- The sponsor checks eligibility: minimum salary (typically AED 4,000 with accommodation or AED 5,000 without), valid tenancy contract, and appropriate accommodation size.
- Apply for an entry permit through the ICP or GDRFA portal, or via an authorised typing centre.
- The dependent enters the UAE if abroad, or changes status if already in country.
- Complete a medical fitness test at an approved health centre.
- Apply for Emirates ID and visa stamping on the passport.
- The residence visa is issued and the dependent's passport is returned with the new visa stamp.
Types of Family Visa
| Type | Description | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse Visa | Residency permit for a husband or wife sponsored by their partner. | When the sponsor meets salary and accommodation requirements and provides an attested marriage certificate. |
| Child Visa | Dependent residency for biological, adopted, or stepchildren under sponsor care. | For sons under 18, or unmarried daughters of any age; sons may extend to 18-21 if studying in the UAE or abroad. |
| Parent Visa | Residency for the sponsor's parents with stricter financial requirements. | When the sponsor earns a significantly higher minimum salary and can provide a larger accommodation proof; not guaranteed in all cases. |
Examples
A Dubai-based software engineer with a monthly salary of AED 8,000 sponsors his wife and two children. He applies through GDRFA, submits his tenancy contract for a two-bedroom apartment, and completes medicals for all dependents. The visas are issued for two years, aligned with his employment visa duration. A Sharjah-based business owner with a Golden Visa sponsors her parents; her three-year family visas matches her longer-term residency status.
Why it matters
A family visa keeps dependants legally resident in the UAE — Emirates ID, healthcare, schooling, banking. Switching to a work visa later is straightforward but requires deliberate cancellation.

FAQs
- Can my wife work on a UAE family visa?
- Not directly. To work, she must obtain her own work permit through her employer. The family visa can be kept (with the sponsor's NOC), or cancelled and reissued as an Employment Visa under the new employer.
