What it is
Copyright is the exclusive legal right granted to the creator of an original work — literary, artistic, musical, audiovisual, software code — to reproduce, distribute, display, and licence the work. The UAE protects copyright under Federal Law No. 38 of 2021 (replacing the 2002 law). Protection arises automatically on creation, but registering the work with the UAE Ministry of Economy provides stronger evidentiary weight in disputes and customs enforcement.
UAE copyright lasts for the author's lifetime plus 50 years (or 25/50 years for specific work types).

How it works
- Creation: The work is fixed in a tangible form — written, recorded, or saved digitally. Copyright attaches automatically.
- Registration (optional but recommended): Submit an application to the UAE Ministry of Economy's Copyright Department with the work, author details, and fees.
- Enforcement: If infringement occurs, the rights holder can file a civil lawsuit for damages, seek injunctive relief, or request criminal prosecution through police and public prosecution.
- Licensing or assignment: The copyright owner may license usage rights to others or assign ownership entirely, typically via written contract.
Types of Copyright
| Type | Description | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Economic Rights | Exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, perform, and adapt the work commercially. | When the owner seeks to monetize or control commercial exploitation of the work. |
| Moral Rights | Non-economic rights including attribution and integrity of the work. | When the creator wishes to prevent unauthorized modifications or claim authorship credit. |
| Related Rights | Rights of performers, producers, and broadcasters in sound recordings and broadcasts. | When protecting investments in recording, performance, or transmission of creative content. |
Examples
A Dubai-based software development company automatically holds copyright in its proprietary code upon creation. It registers the copyright to strengthen its position in a dispute with a former employee who launched a competing product. A Sharjah publishing house licenses translation rights to a foreign publisher, generating royalty income while retaining the original Arabic copyright.
Why it matters
Software code, marketing content, training materials — all copyright-protected and all assets that need formal registration before any infringement dispute or M&A diligence reveals the gap.

FAQs
- Do I need to register my copyright in the UAE?
- Not legally required for protection — copyright arises automatically. Registration with the Ministry of Economy gives a public record that strengthens enforcement, supports customs blocking actions, and is often demanded by acquirers in M&A diligence.
